Self-Guided School Visit
A self-guided visit offers your group a chance to explore the entire museum at their own pace. One adult is required for every five children.
Self-guided groups will be provided with maps, Scavenger Hunts and pencils for an additional fee of $3.00 per child for groups of 20 or more. This basic activity will keep elementary students entertained while exploring the museum.
The group rate admission is $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. You MUST register your group by telephone at least two weeks in advance. See Making Reservations for more information.
Train rides can be included at $2.00 per student based on seasonal availability.

Facilitated Field Trip Workshop
During a facilitated workshop, your preschool or elementary school group will experience a "hands-on" workshop led by a museum educator. It's the perfect way to kick off or culminate a themed unit in your classroom! Our workshops include pre and post visit activities which are aligned with the Missouri "Show Me" Standards. See the focus areas below.
Field trips are approximately two hours long. Each field trip offers an exclusive 45 - 60 minute lesson with a hands-on activity. In addition, students may also elect to participate in an outdoor scavenger hunt and/or a private tour. See Making Reservations for more information.

- Preschool (4's) through Kindergarten, 10 to 25 students
- Grades 1 - 5, 15 to 30 students
- Available Tuesday - Friday (Mondays during seasonal operating hours)
- One hour time slots between 9:00 am & 1:30 pm
- Home School groups are more than welcome to participate in our facilitated field trips. Minimum of 15 students.
- Miniature train rides included Thursday & Friday during seasonal operation, weather permitting.
Field Trip Focus Areas
I’ve Been Working on the Railroad:
Pre-School 4’s
Pre-school students will explore the purpose and design of different railcars during their facilitated classroom lesson. Each child will complete a railroad craft to bring home as a souvenir! Following the lesson, the class will be given a private “children’s” tour of some of the railcars discussed in the lesson. The field trip will conclude with ample time to explore the museum artifacts independently while completing the “Conductor, Conductor” Scavenger Hunt.

Down By the Station: Kindergarten-5th Grade
Students will explore different aspects of railroad transportation. A
unique lesson is designed for each individual grade level. This field trip includes
a private tour of the railcars discussed throughout the instructional lesson.
After the tour, students will have the opportunity to explore all the museum
artifacts while completing a transportation scavenger hunt.

Bird, Plane, Boat or Train?
Kindergarten-1st Grade
Students will compare and contrast different modes of transportation. Sorting, categorizing and graphing skills are emphasized with an interactive transportation activity. The young artists will bring home a wooden transportation vehicle that they decorate themselves. The class will be given a private “children’s” tour of some of the artifacts on the museum grounds. The field trip will be completed with independent exploration of the museum while working on the “Conductor, Conductor” Scavenger Hunt!

What Does It Carry and Where Does It Go? 2nd - 3rd Grade
Students explore the purpose, order and design of the cars in a real “train set.” They will participate in a BIG “hands on" experience with Lego’s! After the lesson, the class will be given a private tour of the railcars on the museum grounds. The field trip will be completed with independent exploration of all artifacts on the museum grounds, including the Lindburg Automobile Building while working on the “I-Spy” Scavenger Hunt for elementary students.

Prized Producers of the Past: 3rd - 4th Grade
From horseback to horsepower, the history of transportation is rooted in the human imagination. Who were the dreamers and how did their ideas become reality? Students will investigate the personalities that made it all happen through dramatic role-playing activities. This is a great lesson for active, creative students that enjoy reading aloud and role playing. A private tour of the museum is included in the programming costs for the entire class. The field trip will conclude after the students have had had time to explore the artifacts independently while working on the “I-Spy” Scavenger Hunt for elementary students.

Tracks Across America: 3rd - 5th Grades
Students will explore the challenges and triumphs of the people who built the transcontinental railroad. Chinese, Irish and Native American cultural connections to the railroad are explored. The children will learn about the different railcars that were used on the Transcontinental Railroad and experience an exciting “hands on” bridge building experiment. A private tour of the railroad artifacts is included in the programming fees. The class will complete their visit with independent exploration of the entire museum while working on the “I-Spy” Scavenger Hunt.

Ford’s Fantastic Idea: 3rd - 5th Grades
Henry Ford’s idea to mass-produce automobiles revolutionized the Automobile Industry. Students will explore this powerful idea in a hands-on activity designed to illustrate “Ford’s Fantastic Idea”. Students will receive a private tour of the Lindburg Automobile Building and other museum railcars and artifacts. The class will complete their visit with independent exploration while working on the “I-Spy” Scavenger Hunt.
